Jamu Gets Fresh Eyes From Chemical-Wary Consumers

From the Jakarta Globe

TURMERIC – the ‘Granddaddy’ of all spices – is an incredible multi-faceted healer that works in supporting the bodies immune system and nervous system (assisting in a healthy response to stress), promotes radiant skin (supporting antioxidant protection against free radicals), healthy digestion, healthy bone, joint and skeletal function, and is great for blood and liver function too. For women turmeric also aids in supporting the reproductive system.

Six-year-old Jemima had been suffering from a bad cough for a long time. Whenever she came in contact with cold temperatures, dust or sweets, it was enough to send her into a fit. The doctor visits and prescriptions were endless, and her mother, television and radio presenter Novita Angie, grew more and more concerned about the potential effects of all this treatment.

“The doctor said it’s because of her allergies,” Novita said. “She had to visit the doctor two to three times every month and got prescribed antibiotics. But taking medicine like that is like borrowing money from the bank. Eventually, you’ll have to repay that debt.”

“My daughter is so young,” she added. “I don’t want her to reap bad things in the future because of all the antibiotics she’s been taking.”

These concerns led Novita to start treating her daughter’s cough with an herbal remedy early this year.

“I’m happy to say that we’ve never visited a doctor since,” Novita said. “And I feel a lot safer because I know that I’m not endangering her body in the long run.”

Herbal-based medicines, often referred to locally as jamu, have been popular in Indonesia for a long time, but in recent years they have become more and more accepted in the mainstream as an effective alternative to certain types of modern medicines.

According to Charles Ong Saerang, president director of Nyonya Meneer, one of the largest jamu producers in the country, the first jamu was concocted by herbalists in the royal courts of Yogyakarta and Surakarta in the 15th century.

“The word jamu comes from the Javanese words jampi [concoction] and usodo [health],” Charles said.

The recipes for jamu spread from the palaces to the common people. Over the years, there have always been Indonesians who believed in and depended on these traditional herbal concoctions, but Charles said more and more people today were choosing to drink jamu instead of taking modern medicines.

“They realize that chemical-based medicines will leave a residue and harm their bodies in the long run, whereas jamu is made entirely of herbs and is safe for the body.”

Since early this year, Mila has also introduced the traditional concoction to her 7-year-old daughter, Nasya.

“She likes it a lot,” Mila said. “She drinks the children’s jamu that doesn’t taste bitter.”

According to Mila, her daughter has been healthily gaining weight since she started drinking the jamu and rarely falls ill.

Bamboo Toothbrushes!

BrushwithBamboo.com

At home

In my long quest to eschew plastic, I began purchasing recycled toothbrushes..about 8 years ago. I enjoyed the Reach toothbrush, but they are expensive, and are still plastic.  Even cycled plastic is not what I want to buy or use in my home at all.  So I have stuck with the toothbrushes will recyclable heads..

I also tried Neem sticks, twigs that you chew and then brush with.  While i LOVE Neem tooth powder…these just didn’t cut it for me!  I am drawn to the fact that they are primitive, cheap. renewable, compostable.  After all, I love doing things in their most basic forms; papermaking, soap making, cooking (making everything from scratch!), weaving, spinning..  BUT, these were too primitive.

Then, I saw these beauties!  Here is what they say about them;

Brush with Bamboo’s starter pack includes 2 toothbrushes. Our bamboo toothbrush is the environmentally conscious choice for your household. This toothbrush has a biodegradable handle made from 100% bamboo. The soft bristles are verified BPA-Free Soft Nylon (recyclable, not biodegradable). The bamboo toothbrush comes in a biodegradable box made from paper. The inside wrapper is made from plants and is compostable in city and commercial facilities. Your bamboo toothbrushes can be used for just as long as plastic toothbrushes.

Healing From Cancer- Health is all about Cause and Effect

Malnourishment is the cause of disease, nourish the body and we get well.

greens

As I was reading the headlines this morning reporting that they think shark “may target breast cancer” it hit me that every few months we hear about something that “might” help us fight cancer.

We are looking at this wrong.  PREVENTING cancer is easy, and healing from cancer is possible.  There is NO one food, or one supplement that will help us heal.  And we know that the medical community is clueless when it comes to health.

To prevent, and heal, cancer we need a healthy immune system, and that means truly meeting your nutrient needs as well as detoxing the body, exercise and managing stress.

Let’s look at these components of health;

Nutrition-  This is the single biggest factor is preventing all diseases, as well as cancer. The issue is that Americans no longer are aware of how to eat, how to get all the nutrients they need.  We are beginning to feel as though being overweight is normal, getting fat is inevitable, that getting sick, having allergies..are all normal.

These conditions are NOT normal.  If you are getting sick often, if you have cancer, if you have low energy, if you are even 10 pounds overweight you are MALNOURISHED!

We have to meet our nutrient needs for our bodies to run efficiently. Think of it this way; if you attempt to drive your car without the proper fuel, it doesn’t work well.  It is no different for our bodies.

Americans began moving away from traditional diets in the sixties, we became terrified of red meat and saturated fats.  At the time there was ample reason to be scared of those foods..the only choices we had were feed lot meat filled with antibiotics, steroids, hormones…stuff we were better off without.  But now all that has changed; we have organic foods and meats that are now very close in price as the conventional foods.

The results were that more and more of us switched to a vegetarian diet, however that way of eating does not meet our nutrient needs and leads to deficiencies.  And because we lowered our protein and fats intake that in turn drove up our carbohydrate intake…leading to weight gain, cancer, strokes, heart disease, higher infant mortality, childhood obesity…I could go on and on!

Exercise- One of the key preventive measures in returning the body to health is exercise.  There are many many reasons to be in motion, but the main reason in preventing cancer is that cancer does not grow well in a body which is oxygenated well.

Stress Reduction- Our lives have gotten out of control; too much rushing around, finances, information overload…and we all know about the extreme damage that cortisol does to our bodies;

  • Impaired cognitive performance
  • Suppressed thyroid function
  • Blood sugar imbalances such as hyperglycemia
  • Decreased bone density
  • Decrease in muscle tissue
  • Higher blood pressure
  • Lowered immunity and inflammatory responses in the body, slowed wound healing, and other health consequences
  • Increased abdominal fat, which is associated with a greater amount of health problems than fat deposited in other areas of the body. Some of the health problems associated with increased stomach fat are heart attacks, strokes, the development of metabolic syndrome, higher levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and lower levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL), which can lead to other health problems.

This article is the first in a series of three, in each article I will be expanding these topics and talking about HOW to heal, what foods are crucial, what a perfect day (nutrition-wise) looks like and the many modalities to healing.  We will look at how to use THC therapy, juicing, yoga, walking, saturated fats, detoxing, Hydrogen peroxide therapy…to heal.

Protocol for Gut Support During and After a Round of Antibiotics

z-pak medsFrom image

Antibiotics are truly a wonder of modern medicine.

Beginning with the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming in 1928, the pure magic of antibiotics with their rapid resolution of bacterial infections of all kinds caused many in the medical profession to become completely enamored with the drug based approach to illness. By 1940, antibiotics had come into widespread use causing both doctors and people to gradually forget about tried and true techniques for preventing illness such as the age old remedy cod liver oil.

This change in the medical paradigm has led in recent decades to abuse of these magical meds and the growing threat of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains. It has also caused in an epidemic of people with compromised gut function due to an imbalanced intestinal environment resulting from excessive exposure to antibiotics via industrially produced foods, medicine, and more recently, groundwater contamination.

While antibiotics clearly have their place in treating life threatening bacterial infections, their overuse has led to a plethora of modern day health challenges and autoimmune disease.

While complete avoidance of all antibiotic exposure would be the ideal, it is simply not practical in the majority of cases. Sometimes, antibiotics are necessary and when such a situation arises, it is imperative to protect the gastrointestinal tract from fungal or yeast overgrowth during treatment and to replenish beneficial gut bacteria when the course of antibiotics is complete.

While antibiotics effectively kill both pathogenic and beneficial bacteria with the exception of antibiotic-resistant species ofstreptococcus and other strains, they do not affect the many forms of yeast such as Candida albicans naturally found in the body in a nondominant role.

Great Uses for Cream of Tartar

Cream of tartar is one of nature’s best bleaching agents. Cream of tartar, a.k.a “crusted wine,” is mixed with baking soda to create baking powder (bet you didn’t know that.. okay, some of you probably did, you smartypants). While it is an acid, it’s not harmful. It’s an acidic salt which comes from grapes.
Use a few tablespoons of cream of tartar with hot water or hydrogen peroxide and clean any aluminum pans which have discoloration or any rusty drains, pans, or stains.
Do you have copper kettles? Mix some cream of tarter with lemon juice and rub the copper with it. Rinse and be amazed!
How about a porcelain sink, tub, commode? Rub the porcelain surfaces with cream of tartar and watch the stains disappear.
Fabric stains? No prob. Mix a few teaspoons of cream of tartar with some glycerin and use like spray-and-wash. The results? Well, I’m here to tell you that this stuff cured the ring around Joshua’s shirt collars.
Just need a great nonabrasive cleaner? Mix 2 teaspoons of vinegar and 2 teaspoon of cream of tartar in a small dish (use 3 or 4 teaspoons of vinegar and 3 or 4 teaspoons of cream of tartar if you have more items to clean). Apply with your cleaning rag or scrub brush and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Scrub. Wash with hot soapy water.

Ditch the Toxic Sunscreen; Use Coconut Oil Instead

From RealNews24

Summer time is beach time, or at least poolside time. But if you want some protection form the sun’s UV rays, don’t always reach for toxic sunscreens. Instead, pack some extra virgin coconut oil along with your beach towel and umbrella.

That’s right, the same extra virgin coconut oil found in your kitchen pantry will do the trick to protect your skin – minus the toxicity from health-compromising ingredients. Coconut oil has been used as an effective sunscreen for thousands of years by indigenous, pacific islanders. Why slather toxic chemicals on your body when you can use non toxic coconut oil instead?

There are two types of UV (ultraviolet) rays from the sun: UVA and UVB. UVA rays are primarily responsible for skin damage from excessive sun exposure that can lead to cancer and skin aging. However, although UVB rays can also cause damage and sunburn, they are necessary for your body to produce its own cancer protective vitamin D via the skin.

Sunlight is by far the optimal way to produce your vitamin D. Blocking UVB rays may inadvertently be increasing your cancer risk by blocking vitamin D absorption. Plus, sunscreen causes cancer through carcinogenic ingredients.

Avoid Toxic Sunscreens

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) approximately 75% of commercial sunscreens contain toxic chemicals that are linked to cancer and disrupt hormones.

Store bought sunscreens typically contain:

  • Retinyl palmitate, a known skin cancer hazard.
  • Oxybenzone, which disrupts hormones leading to cell damage and cancer.
  • Zinc and titanium nanoparticles are in colorless sun screen lotions.

Those and other chemicals rubbed on your skin are readily absorbed into your bloodstream and can be just as unhealthy and toxic as an oral dose.

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) Hoax

An excerpt from a 2012 CNN article about sunscreens:

“The EWG said consumers should not purchase sunscreens with SPF greater than 50. SPF (sun protection factor) works by absorbing, reflecting or scattering the sun’s rays on the skin. It is very misleading to put high SPF numbers on labels because it gives consumers a false sense of security and doesn’t offer a lot more protection.”

While SPF 85 may sound like a lot more protection than SPF 30, the higher the number doesn’t always offer a higher return. Studies show that sunscreen with SPF 15 can block about 93% of all incoming UVB rays. SPF 30 blocks 97%. SPF 50 blocks 98%. The protective factors plateau from there.

“A product with SPF 100+ blocks about 99.1 percent of the UVB rays. You don’t really need a high number. They end up being expensive and don’t offer more protection than SPF 50. Keep in mind, SPF protects only against UVB rays.”

Coconut oil has an SPF of 10 which means 90% of beneficial vitamin D creating UBV rays are blocked. How many people know that SPF ratings do not indicate any protection from the highly damaging UVA rays?

Yet, the American Cancer Society advises to apply a generous amount of of toxic commercial sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure and minimally every two hours thereafter, reapplying after being in the water, sweating, and towel drying.

Choose Coconut Oil for Sunscreen Instead

Daily exposure to the sun is essential to your overall health; it’s the overexposure that could cause some issues. Sunshine exposure is the best way for your body to create health protecting vitamin D. To protect against sunburn, use a non-toxic sunscreen like coconut oil or opt for a low-risk, safe sunscreen that doesn’t contain health-compromising ingredients.

Bruce Fife, ND, author of Coconut Cures: Preventing and Treating Common Health Problems with Coconut Oil,explains that coconut oil applied on the skin protects against sunburn and cancer. Unlike sunscreen, unprocessed coconut oil doesn’t completely block the UVB rays that are necessary for vitamin D synthesis. It protects the skin and underlying tissues from damage excessive exposure can cause. Instead of burning or turning red, it produces a light tan, depending on the length of time you spend in the sun.

Fife asserts that “Consuming coconut oil also strengthens the skin and makes it more resilient and less prone to sunburn.” He warns against using hydrolyzed or processed oil. Just make sure the coconut oil is pure and not processed.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy juice Boxes…or Juice!

From the Website Why Don’t You Try This

Why I Stopped Buying Juice Boxes (The picture will gross you out…)A patient came to my ER after noticing green slime coming up the straw from her Juicy Juice box. Her mom cut open the box – and brought her straight to the doctor. Here’s what we found in the unexpired juice box:
Her juice box was full of mold—green slime that lined the edges of the box. Apparently moldy juice boxes and juice pouches (such as those made by Capri Sun) are nothing new. If even a tiny bit of air gets into the container molds can grow. Air can get into a juice box through a hole that’s so small you can’t see it, and it doesn’t cause leaking. Such a tiny puncture also permits the sugars in the juice to ferment, turning the product into a form of alcohol.

Juicy Juice and many other kid’s juice products are made without preservatives, permitting mold to grow even more easily.

The good news for my patient is that moldy, fermented juice is usually not very dangerous to drink. An upset stomach and a totally grossed out mom are the most common complications.

But I recommended she cut out the juice, anyway. Why? Because juice is so full of sugar and calories that some have called it a gateway drug. Sugar ingestion can actually cause release of natural opiates (really). Opiate release stimulates the desire for other sweets and junk food. High salt and high fat foods can also trigger release of pleasure-inducing opiates. This is why so many people binge on ice cream, potato chips, and other favorite junk foods like Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

The more sugar-laden juice your kids drink, the more opiates flood their system, and the more they will beg for another juice box. After drinking all those calories and stimulating their sweet tooth, chances are your kids won’t be interested in dinner. Some high sugar, high fat, high salt food might sound good, though. Sound familiar?

Too much fruit juice can also cause tooth decay, diarrhea, and flatulence. There are plenty of other healthy foods that contain the vitamins your kids need, and without the high sugar and calories. Kids just don’t need juice.
The American Academy of Pediatrics offers this guidance regarding kids and fruit juice.

  • Juice should not be introduced into the diet of infants before 6 months of age, unless directed by your physician. Occasionally small amounts of fruit juice may be recommended as a treatment for constipation.
  • In children ages 6 months -6 years, fruit juice offers no nutritional benefit over whole fruit. Whole fruits also provide fiber and other nutrients.
  • If you do let your kids drink fruit juice, do not allow your child to carry a sippy cup, bottle or box of juice throughout the day. Intake of fruit juice should be limited to 4 to 6 oz/d for children 1 to 6 years old. For children 7 to 18 years old, juice intake should be limited to 8 to 12 oz or 2 servings per day.
  • Never serve your kids unpasteurized juice.
  • These recommendations are for 100% fruit juice, which differs from juice drinks. Fruit drinks often provide little to no nutritional benefit.

Why I Stopped Buying Juice Boxes (The picture will gross you out…)OK, I admit it, I’ve bought juice boxes for birthday parties and soccer games. They are convenient, they keep kids happy, and they’re probably healthier than soda. But you just can’t tell from looking at a juice box if it is moldy—you won’t know until you start drinking, and sometimes you won’t know until you get to the bottom… So as for my family, we’re going back to the cooler of ice water for soccer games. If the kids complain, we’ll hand out good snacks.
Sincere thanks to the patient and her mother who permitted the photography of their juice box and gave permission for the publication of this story.

The Monsanto-Free Seed Company List

image

A great post from Natural Cures Not Medicine

Some background that’s important to understand when using this list-

The Safe Seed Pledge

“Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative, we pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants. The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms poses great biological risks, as well as economic, political and cultural threats. We feel that genetically engineered varieties have been insufficiently tested prior to public release. More research and testing is necessary to further assess the potential risks of genetically engineered seeds. Further, we wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately healthy people and communities.”

History of the Safe Seed Pledge

The Safe Seed Pledge was created in 1999 when High Mowing Organic Seeds guided a coalition of 9 other seed companies in drafting a statement about the signers’ stance on genetic engineering. Over 70 companies have signed the pledge, ranging from large seed companies to family-owned businesses such as ours.

In signing the Safe Seed Pledge we affirm our commitment to non-GMO (genetically modified organism) seed.  We feel that the regulatory framework for the introduction of genetically modified crop varieties is flawed, and that GMO seeds themselves present a threat to plants’ genetic diversity through their ability to pollinate non-GMO plants.

But then Monsanto comes along….

It’s not terribly easy to avoid them, which is why we’ve compiled the list below

In 2005, Monsanto purchased Semenis which was (and is) the world’s largest seed company and now they own thousands of conventional seed companies in addition to their GMO seed business.  Monsanto now owns 40% of the conventional seed market in the US and 20% of the worldwide market, including organics and heirlooms.  It’s not terribly easy to avoid them, which is why we’ve compiled the list below list with the help of readers and some experts from the field, both to help you navigate through things as well as encouragement for companies to take part in the boycott so that they may also qualify to have their names included.
