TURMERIC – the ‘Granddaddy’ of all spices – is an incredible multi-faceted healer that works in supporting the bodies immune system and nervous system (assisting in a healthy response to stress), promotes radiant skin (supporting antioxidant protection against free radicals), healthy digestion, healthy bone, joint and skeletal function, and is great for blood and liver function too. For women turmeric also aids in supporting the reproductive system.

Six-year-old Jemima had been suffering from a bad cough for a long time. Whenever she came in contact with cold temperatures, dust or sweets, it was enough to send her into a fit. The doctor visits and prescriptions were endless, and her mother, television and radio presenter Novita Angie, grew more and more concerned about the potential effects of all this treatment.
“The doctor said it’s because of her allergies,” Novita said. “She had to visit the doctor two to three times every month and got prescribed antibiotics. But taking medicine like that is like borrowing money from the bank. Eventually, you’ll have to repay that debt.”
“My daughter is so young,” she added. “I don’t want her to reap bad things in the future because of all the antibiotics she’s been taking.”
These concerns led Novita to start treating her daughter’s cough with an herbal remedy early this year.
“I’m happy to say that we’ve never visited a doctor since,” Novita said. “And I feel a lot safer because I know that I’m not endangering her body in the long run.”
Herbal-based medicines, often referred to locally as jamu, have been popular in Indonesia for a long time, but in recent years they have become more and more accepted in the mainstream as an effective alternative to certain types of modern medicines.
According to Charles Ong Saerang, president director of Nyonya Meneer, one of the largest jamu producers in the country, the first jamu was concocted by herbalists in the royal courts of Yogyakarta and Surakarta in the 15th century.
“The word jamu comes from the Javanese words jampi [concoction] and usodo [health],” Charles said.
The recipes for jamu spread from the palaces to the common people. Over the years, there have always been Indonesians who believed in and depended on these traditional herbal concoctions, but Charles said more and more people today were choosing to drink jamu instead of taking modern medicines.
“They realize that chemical-based medicines will leave a residue and harm their bodies in the long run, whereas jamu is made entirely of herbs and is safe for the body.”
Since early this year, Mila has also introduced the traditional concoction to her 7-year-old daughter, Nasya.
“She likes it a lot,” Mila said. “She drinks the children’s jamu that doesn’t taste bitter.”
According to Mila, her daughter has been healthily gaining weight since she started drinking the jamu and rarely falls ill.
Sunshine May Benefit Blood Pressure
Posted: January 23, 2014 Filed under: Food and it's Impact on Our Health | Tags: high blood pressure, sunlight, Vitamin D Leave a comment
By NICHOLAS BAKALAR From The New York Times
Exposure to sunlight may be a factor in lowering blood pressure.
Studies have shown that in people with mild hypertension, blood pressure tends to be lower in the summer than in the winter, and that both average blood pressure and the incidence of cardiovascular disease tend to increase with distance from the equator.
Researchers exposed 24 healthy volunteers to ultraviolet A radiation for 30 minutes with an intensity comparable to noon on a sunny day in Southern Europe. The exposure caused a small but significant drop in blood pressure compared with when the same people were exposed to sham UVA radiation (the same amount of heat and light, but no UVA exposure).
Blood tests showed that UVA exposure caused a release of nitric oxide from the skin into the bloodstream. Nitric oxide causes arteries to dilate, and this, the scientists believe, accounts for the effect. The study appears in The Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
The senior author, Dr. Richard B. Weller, a dermatologist at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, said that the modest effect of sunlight is significant on a population level, where small reductions in average blood pressure can have vast public health benefits.
But for an individual with high blood pressure sunbathing is not the solution. “Getting sunlight is not enough if your blood pressure is high. And if you have high blood pressure,” Dr. Weller said, “you need to get it controlled.”

More Horrible Advice for Diabetics
Posted: October 19, 2013 Filed under: Food and it's Impact on Our Health Leave a comment
This is absolutely ABSURD!! Because ONE food can help lower the glucose level in the body, does NOT mean that it is a good idea to follow this ridiculous advice!. SEVEN cups a day would severely lower the appetite, harm the lining of the stomach, lead to inability to sleep. Now don’t get me wrong, I am fully cognizant of coffees benefits, it’s a great addition to the morning as long as it is taken in moderation (one to two cups)…but controlling or even reversing diabetes is all about eating correctly, nourishing the body, repairing the damage manifested my eating too may carbs…NOT using a LOT of coffee to treat symptoms!
This was the post;
Increased coffee consumption results in a substantially reduced risk of diabetes. Coffee’s anti-diabetic benefits are dose-dependent; the more you drink, the greater your benefit (think 7+ cups of coffee a day). If you cannot or do not want to drink so much coffee, Chlorogenic acid in coffee, which is primarily responsible for its glucose-lowering effects, is also found in green coffee bean extract supplements. Healing From Cancer- Health is all about Cause and Effect
Posted: September 28, 2013 Filed under: Food and it's Impact on Our Health, Non-Toxic Choices Leave a commentMalnourishment is the cause of disease, nourish the body and we get well.
As I was reading the headlines this morning reporting that they think shark “may target breast cancer” it hit me that every few months we hear about something that “might” help us fight cancer.
We are looking at this wrong. PREVENTING cancer is easy, and healing from cancer is possible. There is NO one food, or one supplement that will help us heal. And we know that the medical community is clueless when it comes to health.
To prevent, and heal, cancer we need a healthy immune system, and that means truly meeting your nutrient needs as well as detoxing the body, exercise and managing stress.
Let’s look at these components of health;
Nutrition- This is the single biggest factor is preventing all diseases, as well as cancer. The issue is that Americans no longer are aware of how to eat, how to get all the nutrients they need. We are beginning to feel as though being overweight is normal, getting fat is inevitable, that getting sick, having allergies..are all normal.
These conditions are NOT normal. If you are getting sick often, if you have cancer, if you have low energy, if you are even 10 pounds overweight you are MALNOURISHED!
We have to meet our nutrient needs for our bodies to run efficiently. Think of it this way; if you attempt to drive your car without the proper fuel, it doesn’t work well. It is no different for our bodies.
Americans began moving away from traditional diets in the sixties, we became terrified of red meat and saturated fats. At the time there was ample reason to be scared of those foods..the only choices we had were feed lot meat filled with antibiotics, steroids, hormones…stuff we were better off without. But now all that has changed; we have organic foods and meats that are now very close in price as the conventional foods.
The results were that more and more of us switched to a vegetarian diet, however that way of eating does not meet our nutrient needs and leads to deficiencies. And because we lowered our protein and fats intake that in turn drove up our carbohydrate intake…leading to weight gain, cancer, strokes, heart disease, higher infant mortality, childhood obesity…I could go on and on!
Exercise- One of the key preventive measures in returning the body to health is exercise. There are many many reasons to be in motion, but the main reason in preventing cancer is that cancer does not grow well in a body which is oxygenated well.
Stress Reduction- Our lives have gotten out of control; too much rushing around, finances, information overload…and we all know about the extreme damage that cortisol does to our bodies;
- Impaired cognitive performance
- Suppressed thyroid function
- Blood sugar imbalances such as hyperglycemia
- Decreased bone density
- Decrease in muscle tissue
- Higher blood pressure
- Lowered immunity and inflammatory responses in the body, slowed wound healing, and other health consequences
- Increased abdominal fat, which is associated with a greater amount of health problems than fat deposited in other areas of the body. Some of the health problems associated with increased stomach fat are heart attacks, strokes, the development of metabolic syndrome, higher levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and lower levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL), which can lead to other health problems.
This article is the first in a series of three, in each article I will be expanding these topics and talking about HOW to heal, what foods are crucial, what a perfect day (nutrition-wise) looks like and the many modalities to healing. We will look at how to use THC therapy, juicing, yoga, walking, saturated fats, detoxing, Hydrogen peroxide therapy…to heal.
Protocol for Gut Support During and After a Round of Antibiotics
Posted: September 28, 2013 Filed under: Food and it's Impact on Our Health, Non-Toxic Choices 1 CommentAntibiotics are truly a wonder of modern medicine.
Beginning with the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming in 1928, the pure magic of antibiotics with their rapid resolution of bacterial infections of all kinds caused many in the medical profession to become completely enamored with the drug based approach to illness. By 1940, antibiotics had come into widespread use causing both doctors and people to gradually forget about tried and true techniques for preventing illness such as the age old remedy cod liver oil.
This change in the medical paradigm has led in recent decades to abuse of these magical meds and the growing threat of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains. It has also caused in an epidemic of people with compromised gut function due to an imbalanced intestinal environment resulting from excessive exposure to antibiotics via industrially produced foods, medicine, and more recently, groundwater contamination.
While antibiotics clearly have their place in treating life threatening bacterial infections, their overuse has led to a plethora of modern day health challenges and autoimmune disease.
While complete avoidance of all antibiotic exposure would be the ideal, it is simply not practical in the majority of cases. Sometimes, antibiotics are necessary and when such a situation arises, it is imperative to protect the gastrointestinal tract from fungal or yeast overgrowth during treatment and to replenish beneficial gut bacteria when the course of antibiotics is complete.
While antibiotics effectively kill both pathogenic and beneficial bacteria with the exception of antibiotic-resistant species ofstreptococcus and other strains, they do not affect the many forms of yeast such as Candida albicans naturally found in the body in a nondominant role.

Study Finds That Raw Garlic Cuts Lung Cancer Risk In Half
Posted: September 28, 2013 Filed under: Food and it's Impact on Our Health Leave a comment
A new study out of China has determined that people who consume raw garlic as a regular diet were 44% less likely to suffer from lung cancer.
Researchers at the Jiangsu Provincial Centre for Disease Control surveyed the participants on their diet and lifestyle habits, including garlic consumption and whether or not they were smokers. Even among those who smoked, the garlic consumption reduced lung cancer risk by 30%. The study was published in the Journal Cancer Prevention research.
Researchers believe that the benefits of raw garlic may be linked to a chemical called allicin, which is released once the garlic is either smashed or diced. This chemical is rumoured to not only reduce inflammation but also decrease the damage from free radicals to the body’s cells. The study used the data of approximately 4,500 lung cancer patients and 4,500 healthy adults from 2003 to 2010. If you are looking to provide your body with a healthier environment, this is just one of the many health benefits raw garlic can provide you with. It’s time for human beings to make a change, and one of those changes includes the way we eat.
Cancer incidence rates continue to rise every year, according to the American Cancer Society. Males have approximately a 1 in 2 chance of developing cancer within their lifetime, and a 1 in 4 chance of dying from it. Women have a 1 in 3 chance of developing it and a 1 in 5 risk of dying from it. We continue to search for a cure, while we forget to acknowledge the cause. We choose to surround ourselves with a bombardment of chemicals, GMOs, artificial sweeteners, harmful cosmetics, hazardous household products and more. Is it really a mystery that cancer rates continue to increase? Our eating habits as a whole tend to be extremely poor and we continue to ignore the amount of research that can render cancer lifeless.
For example, here is a list of 20 medical studies that prove cannabis can be an effective treatment, and possible cure for cancer. Here, doctors at the University of Alberta discovered a cure for cancer, a substance that dramatically reduced tumors that has never seen proper attention from the medical industry due to its inability to generate a profit. The list goes on and on. The information shared in the video below is also something to ponder when thinking about both cancer and cancer cures. I am definitely open to the idea that certain cures are suppressed, and Kimberly Carter Gamble makes a good point in the video on that exact idea. At the end of the day it all comes down to making better choices in your life.

Science Explains Why Spending Time Outside Is Important to Your Health
Posted: September 11, 2013 Filed under: Food and it's Impact on Our Health Leave a commentAnother great post from Lifehacker
Most of us spend huge amounts of time indoors and barely get outside at all, much less in the daytime. Unfortunately, staying indoors can have serious effects on our health, both physical and mental. This video from ASAPScience explains why it’s so important to get out every once in awhile.P
If your job keeps you in a cubicle every day, or you work in IT and you have the requisite IT cave with no windows and one entry and exit, sunlight is that thing you hear about from other people with windows. You get to work when the sun’s coming up, and you leave when the sun is setting (or already gone). Well, according to ASAPScience, you may be doing your body a disservice.P
For starters, you need the Vitamin D that your body produces from direct sunlight to keep your bones healthy and stave off diseases like osteoporosis. Similarly, a number of studies have shown that just spending time with nature—not just outdoors, but in a park or on a hike—can boost your creativity and cognitive function. It may sound strange, but we’ve mentioned this research in the past. So if you have the opportunity, take your lunch outside, preferably in the park, and get some sun.
